About Chincoteague Wild Pony Tours
Barnacle Bill’s Wild Pony Boat Tours offers narrated boat tours in Chincoteague, Virginia, focused on Assateague Island’s wild ponies, coastal wildlife, and the stories that define this unique stretch of the Eastern Shore. Based in Chincoteague, our tours are designed to help guests understand what they’re seeing, not just pass by it.
The waters surrounding Chincoteague and Assateague are rich with history, wildlife, and tradition. From the famous wild ponies that roam the island to the waterways shaped by tides, storms, and generations of island life, this area has a story worth telling. Our goal is to share those stories in a way that is respectful, informative, and memorable.
A Thoughtful Approach to Touring Assateague
Wild Pony Tours is built around a simple idea: great tours start with knowledge and respect for the place you’re exploring. Our routes are carefully chosen to provide natural viewing opportunities without disturbing wildlife or fragile habitats. Ponies are observed in their natural environment, and narration focuses on behavior, history, and conservation rather than spectacle.

Guests often see wild ponies along Assateague’s shoreline, along with bald eagles, ospreys, dolphins, pelicans, and other coastal species. Because these animals live freely, every tour is a little different. That unpredictability is part of what makes the experience authentic.
Live Narration, Local Knowledge
All Wild Pony Tours are fully narrated by experienced local captains who know these waters firsthand. Rather than recorded audio or scripted commentary, narration happens live and adapts to what’s unfolding around the boat. Questions are encouraged, stories evolve naturally, and guests leave with a deeper understanding of the island and its wildlife.
Tours also explore the cultural side of Chincoteague, including island traditions, maritime history, and the legacy of the Pony Swim that made Assateague’s ponies famous worldwide. References to Misty of Chincoteague and the people who shaped island life are woven into the experience, adding context to what guests see from the water.
Inspired by a Local Storytelling Legacy
Wild Pony Tours proudly carries forward the spirit of “Barnacle” Bill Melvin, a beloved Chincoteague storyteller whose love for the island helped generations of visitors connect with its history and character. That legacy of storytelling, curiosity, and respect continues to shape how our tours are designed and delivered today.
Meet Our Expert Captain

Captain Brian Rohrback brings more than 40 years of personal connection to Chincoteague and Assateague Island to every Wild Pony Tour. Having spent decades on these waters, Captain Brian has seen the island change through seasons, storms, and generations—giving him a rare, firsthand understanding of the area’s wildlife, waterways, and traditions.
His deep familiarity with the wild ponies goes beyond sightings. Captain Brian understands their behavior, habitats, and seasonal movements, and shares that knowledge in a calm, respectful way that prioritizes conservation and responsible viewing.
As an expert local captain, Brian’s narration is unscripted and responsive, shaped by real-time conditions on the water. Guests are encouraged to ask questions, observe closely, and learn not just where the ponies are, but why they live the way they do.
For many guests, touring with Captain Brian feels less like a commercial excursion and more like exploring Assateague with someone who truly knows it.

Remembering “Barnacle” Bill
Jan 24, 1940 – Jan 21, 2024
Born and raised on Chincoteague Island, “Barnacle” Bill Melvin was a true local legend. He and his family are well-known throughout the community for running Barnacle Bill’s Bait & Tackle Shop on Main Street—a gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
Bill was beloved for his larger-than-life personality and his gift for storytelling. Always quick with a laugh and a tale, he had a remarkable way of bringing Chincoteague’s history and wildlife to life. His deep knowledge of the island, its wild ponies, and its waterways made every tour with him a one-of-a-kind experience.
What set Bill apart wasn’t just his stories—it was the way he told them. Drawing from his own life as a Saltwater Cowboy, a waterman, and someone who lived through iconic moments like the 1962 Ash Wednesday Storm and the era of “Misty of Chincoteague,” he shared his memories with authenticity, humor, and heart.
A boat tour with Barnacle Bill wasn’t just a ride—it was a journey through the soul of Chincoteague. While Bill is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through the stories he shared and the unforgettable experiences he created. Today, Wild Pony Boat Tours is proud to carry on his tradition, led by a team that cares just as deeply about the island, its wildlife, and its people as Bill did. Every tour is a tribute to his passion, spirit, and love for Chincoteague.
