Planning your trip with Wild Pony Boat Tours? We’ve got answers!

Whether you’re wondering what to bring, how to book, or what to expect on the water, this page covers the most common questions we receive from our guests.

If you don’t see your question listed, feel free to contact us — we’re happy to help and want to make sure your experience is smooth, safe, and unforgettable.

Our standard narrated tours are approximately 2 hours long. Occasionally, tours may run slightly longer depending on wildlife sightings or guest interests.

Yes, we have a clean onboard bathroom available for guest use throughout the tour—no need to worry about going back to shore.

While we have an excellent success rate (around 90% for ponies year-round), sightings are not guaranteed, as the animals are wild and roam freely. We often also see bald eagles, dolphins (in season), ospreys, and other coastal wildlife.

Wild ponies and other wildlife can be seen throughout the day. Unlike deer, ponies graze and move around all day long—whether they're walking, resting, or socializing near the marshes, woodlands, or beaches. Shorebirds, bald eagles, and dolphins are also active at various times, making every tour unique. No matter what time you join us, you’ll have a great chance of spotting ponies and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

Yes. All of our tours include live narration by expert local captains who share stories about the wild ponies, island history, wildlife, and hidden gems of Chincoteague and Assateague.

Children of all ages are welcome! However, per U.S. Coast Guard regulations, every person counts toward our passenger limit, including infants, so they must be included in your total guest count and will be charged accordingly.

Yes! Our boat has a full canopy that provides shade for all guests. While it offers excellent sun protection, it does not prevent rain from blowing in during showers.

Absolutely. We carry U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all ages and sizes. Life jackets are optional for adults but are available for anyone who wants one. Children’s life jackets are provided and may be required at the captain’s discretion.

All tours are weather-dependent. If conditions are unsafe or unpleasant, we will notify you by text or email and give the option to cancel, reschedule, or receive a full refund. If the weather is borderline, we’ll provide guidance, but the final decision may be up to you.

Yes—there’s no charge for cancellations or group size changes made at least 24 hours in advance. Cancellations inside the 24-hour window are subject to full charge unless we’re able to rebook your seats.

Yes! You’re welcome to bring snacks, drinks, and small coolers on board. Alcohol is permitted in moderation. Please be respectful of other guests and keep things tidy.

All tours depart from our dock at Curtis Marina Harbor Marina. You’ll receive exact directions and parking info in your confirmation email and reminder messages. Optionally, you can click the link at the top of the page.

Yes, gratuities are always appreciated. If you enjoyed your experience, it's customary to tip your boat captain and crew as a thank-you for their hard work. Our team is dedicated to making your tour enjoyable, informative, and memorable—and your tip is a great way to show your appreciation for their effort and enthusiasm.

While we love dogs—and know they love boat rides too—we only allow pets on private tours. This policy ensures the comfort of all guests, as some may have allergies or concerns about being around animals. We appreciate your understanding and invite you to bring your furry friend along when you book a private charter.
